We switched to cloth when Ariana was 4 months old after I got the image of the plastic pants style from the 70's out of my head. It has since become a hobby obsession of mine. The options are endless and the patterns are to die for. I started wondering if cloth diapering was actually turning out to be cheaper than disposable diapering for us with all my spending sprees.
The average cost for disposable diapering (wipes included) is $82.00 per month. Which makes one year $984.00 in diapers and wipes alone!!
The average cloth diaper is $18, but most now are one size diapers built to grow with babies from 10 pounds to 35/40 pounds so the use is unlimited. We have different types of diapers so I'm going to take actual inventory of them for the sake of this post. A lot of the cloth diapering lingo are hover links for those of you who don't know the difference between a fitted and a prefold!
two dozen prefolds - $54.00
three Bummis covers - $33.00
two Goodmama fitteds (that I bought on sale) - $25.00
two Muttaquin Baby fitteds (also on sale) - $20.00
one Bagshot Row Bamboo fitted - $20.00
one Thirsties cover - $10.00
three custom WAHM (work at home mom) covers - $29.00
three Bum Genius 3.0 pocket diapers - $53.00
two Happy Heinys - $30.00
flannel material for cloth wipes - $15.00
essential oils for wipes solution - $18.00
total cost of our stash of cloth diapers over a 10 month period - $307.00
I have also started making my own cloth diapers, starting with these two. I used scrap material I had from my Mei Tai orders or old sweaters and shirts that we were getting rid of anyway.
I did order a pair of snap pliers and an assortment of snaps to give these diapers a more finished look than velcro would. Ok, ok really I just can't get Ariana to lay still long enough to get a trim fit with pins. The total cost of the snap pliers and snaps was $34.00.
Our electric and water bill is slightly more than it was pre-cloth diapers, but nothing too signifigant. I only do a diaper wash twice a week. I think the drastic price difference would be enough to convert anyone even without the allure of an adorable fluffy butt, or doing our part to reduce waste in landfills!

Great job on the diapers you made!!! Evie is the same as Ariana...I just can't get her to hold still long enough to pin her anymore. Lately she likes to do an ab workout during diaper changes. :P
